Government

The Town of Howey-in-the-Hills, by Charter, has a "strong Mayor-Council" form of government.  The strong Mayor-Council form of government combines the political leadership of the elected officials who, as the Town Council, establish the policies and laws of the Town, and the Mayor is responsible, through the various Departments and Boards, for their implementation and execution.
Under Departments you will find the pages for the Mayor and Town Council, Town Clerk, Howey Police Department, Public Works Department/Utility Department.  Also included are descriptions and links to the numerous Volunteer Boards of the Town, including Planning &  Zoning, Parks and Recreation, Historical Preservation, Cemetery, Code Enforcement, and Library.
Information on our Town Parks and recreational facilities is presented in the Community Services link.  Information is also available on Taylor Memorial Cemetery.
The Howey Library is one of the Town's most prized assets.   Find out how this remarkable community library got its start and where it's headed today!

About the Boards

Residents and property owners are encouraged to apply for positions on one or more of the Town's several volunteer boards.   Members of each Board are appointed from a pool of applicants and generally serve two-year terms.  These volunteer boards serve an important role in the government of the Town by carrying out the various duties and responsibilities of each board which, among other duties, include the following:

  • serve as communication links between the Town's government and the general public;
  • direct attention toward specific issues and problems concerning their board, recommending Council action and/or alternatives for Council's consideration;
  • balance the programs of their boards with the resources available to them through the annual budget;
  • carry out their duties and responsibilities in strict compliance with the State of Florida's Government in the Sunshine provisions and the Code of Ethics.
