THE LIBRARY IS HAVING A BOOK SALE

SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 2006

8:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.

The Marianne Beck Memorial Library is our pride and joy.  Begun as an Eagle Scout project about ten years ago, the Library has grown from a two-room space in a former carport and breeze-way of the Howey Police Department, with standing-room only, to a full-fledged Library complete with state-of-the-art public access computing.  Thanks to private monetary donations of concerned citizens in our small community and the Gates Library Initiative grant program founded by Bill and Melinda Gates, the Library has made a giant leap forward.

In only a few months time, the local citizens joined together to raise nearly $50,000 for the interior remodeling of a former convenience store purchased by the Town for use as the new library facility.  Remodeling plans swung into high gear when the Town was awarded four public access computers, a server, and laser printer through the Gates Library Initiative grant funding program for public access computers.

Notice a season specific icon on the main computers!!  Click on the icon, and you will be presented with a number of links to information on the web about that particular season.  Games, poetry, readings, and other information are all included.  

Volunteer Pat Mahar has been putting this together for us.

MahJongg players—learners or otherwise—meet on Mondays at 12 noon, for an hour or more of instruction and playing.

LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER NEEDED.  Applications are available at the Library or Town Hall.  The Library Board meets on the first Thursday of every month, at 7 p.m., at the Library.

A number of books have been donated in honor of Clio Merkel, a long time Howey resident, who has recently moved to New Mexico to be near her family.  Clio was past president of the Howey Civic and Garden Club.  These books will be indicated by an orange “dot” on the spine, and a nameplate inside the book.  They will be shelved on the “NEW” bookcase for the present time.  Come and enjoy them.  She would be delighted if you did.

And speaking of T-shirts—Friends of the Library has Marianne Beck Memorial Library T-shirts available for $10.00 at the Library.
